Enrichment Programs at EDS
"There is a brilliant child
locked inside every student."
Art at EDS
All
EDS students enjoy participating in a new school-wide Art Program in our
fabulous art studio! The art program is unique in that it has been
designed to follow classroom themes and core curriculum at each grade level.
Students participate in art activities based on the California Visual
Arts Standards while learning how art goes hand in hand with subjects like
science, math, and social studies. Our school-wide Art Coordinator, Melanie
Christie, provides training and support for a dedicated group of volunteers
who teach carefully-designed art lessons each week. We are proud to display
student art wherever we can!

Cooking at EDS
Cooking is a great way to
teach math and science concepts such as measurement, chemistry, nutrition, and
the properties of matter. EDS has its own cooking room, where students
participate in regular cooking lessons provided by teachers and dedicated
volunteers.
Along the way, they have the
opportunity to learn about healthy eating habits, try foods from many
different cultures and learn cooking skills and
vocabulary.
Gardening at EDS
Moreland
Woods, an outdoor environmental studies area adjacent to our campus, houses
our classroom gardens. After the move to our new campus this year, 5th and 6th
graders reconstructed raised beds and filled them with soil.
This year, classrooms have worked hard to get their beds up and
running, even in the midst of the hungry rabbits that roam in Moreland Woods! We
are looking forward to a great spring harvest and coming back to beautiful
sunflowers next fall!
Music and
Performing Arts at EDS
From
classroom reader’s theaters, to our weekly Friday School Sings, to
concerts and productions for bigger audiences, EDS students get lots of
opportunities to perform. Music and Performing Arts are very much part of the
integrated curriculum at the K-1 level. Students learn songs about science and
social studies topics and perform for parents during the year. They act out
stories and participate in small reader’s theater productions in the classroom.
At the 2-5 level, students go to an integrated performing arts class each
week provided by Rhythm and Moves. Instrumental music is provided
for students in 4th to 6th grade.
In addition, this year we
are piloting a joint program with Children’s Musical Theater in San Jose
to put on a production with 60 K-3 students and 50 special education students
from our County and District Special Day classes as well as from the County
Autism Project.
Band and Orchestra at EDS
Music Students Earn High Honors at Great America Music
Festival: This past Saturday (Mary 12, 2007) the EDS Band and the Moreland
Honor Band and Honor
Orchestra attended the Music in the Parks Festival. We
had a wonderful day, beginning with our performances at Milpitas High School,
continuing with an afternoon of fun at Great America and the awards ceremony at
the Nickelodeon Stage.
In its first year of existence, the EDS Band brought home
a trophy and a rating of "Good". The Honor Band received a rating of
"Excellent" and the Honor Orchestra received "Superior".
The three trophies are
currently on proud display in the EDS music room, and can been seen starting
next Monday in the EDS office. They are surely the first of what will become a
large collection. Congratulations to the musicians of all three performing
groups!
Sports and Physical
Education Programs at EDS
All
students receive physical education instruction from a contracted PE
teacher. The curriculum includes lifelong fitness, healthy habits, strength
and agility, skills, and sportsmanship. Fifth and sixth grade students can
participate in after school basketball and volleyball this year
provided by the YMCA. This year we are looking forward to our first annual
March Madness Intramural Basketball Tournament and plan to get the whole
school community involved!
Field Trips and
Special Events at EDS
Field
trips at EDS are closely connected to content standards and serve as an
extension of the learning that happens in the classroom. Students can expect
to take 5-9 field trips each year. Students and staff enjoy the opportunity to
learn in places such as Longs Marine Lab in Santa Cruz, California
Theater Center, Campbell History Museum, DeAnza Planetarium,
Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, The Tech Museum, The San Jose Art Museum,
The State Capital in Sacramento, and aboard the Tall Ships!
