About
Easterbrook Discovery School,
Moreland School District
San Jose, California
EXCELLENCE.
EDS
has the honor of being chosen as a Model School by the International Center for
Leadership
in Education as one of the few schools in Santa Clara County. Our staff shares
information about teaching practice and programs with a nationwide network of
other model schools. In addition, SJSU uses our site as a model of best
practice for their credential students. EDS is designated as a National Blue
Ribbon School and has been named Most Caring Community by the Cornerstone
Foundation.
ENRICHMENT.
Students at
EDS are provided with a wide variety of enrichment activities allowing them
apply both academic and social skills to real world tasks. Students have weekly
opportunities to participate in activities such as cooking, gardening, visual
arts, and working in the computer lab. Moreland Woods, an outdoor environmental
studies lab located adjacent to our campus provides students with a place to
work and learn about taking care of their environment. All students receive
weekly PE and Performing
Arts classes.
ENLIGHTENMENT.
The collaborative culture at EDS encourages students to work as a team and to
solve problems in creative ways. Students learn to work together and appreciate
each other’s talents and contributions.
Students have
many opportunities to celebrate and serve our diverse community. From
Kindergarten on, students participate in service learning projects such as
Pennies for Patients, Adopt-a-Family, and Beach Clean-Up Days. Activities
throughout the year give families an opportunity to share their cultures and
learn from each other.
A SCHOOL OF CHOICE
EDS
is a research-based award winning elementary school that offers an alternative
to traditional neighborhood schools by focusing on the partnership between
staff, teachers and parents.
At EDS, we are dedicated to helping each child reach his or her
full potential both academically and as a contributing member of the community.
Unique features of the program at EDS include:
-
Multi-age
classrooms and the ability of a student to stay with one teacher for two
consecutive years.
-
Integrated
curriculum providing children with the opportunity to make connections and
build important concepts as well as acquiring and applying new knowledge to
what they already know.
-
Weekly
cooking, gardening, physical education, and visual and performing arts
supported by specialists and trained parent volunteers.
DEVELOPMENT- BASED CURRICULUM
The
staff at EDS believes that every child should be provided with a safe and
nurturing environment in which to grow and learn. Instruction is
development-based and differentiated to ensure measurable academic gains by each
student. Focus is on small group instruction, hands on learning, broad
comprehensive themes, differentiated instruction and the latest findings in
brain research. Instruction is designed so that children capitalize on their
strengths while receiving support in areas that are more difficult for them.
Equal emphasis is placed on the learning process and a quality work. We
believe that in learning, the journey is as important as the destination.
INVOLVED
PARENTS BUILD A STRONG SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Our
vision is for 100% of the parents at EDS to actively participate in their
child’s education and in our school community. Research shows that the
partnership between school and family is a strong indicator of student
success. At EDS, this partnership allows for small group instruction in every
classroom setting. Under the direction of the teacher, parents work with small
groups or one-on-one to ensure that all students get the support they need to
reach their full potential. In addition, parents receive training that is
valuable in working with children in the classroom and with their children at
home.
Parents also
bring unique talents and skills to our classroom. Core curriculum is enhanced
when parents support weekly activities such as cooking gardening, art, and
community service projects.
